Slow Cooker Cranberry Applesauce

October 16, 2013 by Shannon

I’m addicted to making applesauce in the slow cooker.  It’s easy, there’s nothing on the stove to keep and eye on and it’s just downright delicious!  Over the past few months I have made several different types of flavored applesauce, but I am especially excited about this one.  This Cranberry Applesauce is wonderful any day of the week, but I think I am going to serve this on Thanksgiving too.

This Easy #SlowCooker #Cranberry Applesauce makes a great Holiday side dish! #crockpot

My children don’t care for traditional cranberry sauce, but they love this!  The perfect blend of fresh apples, cranberries and spices make this recipe a keeper.  You can also make this applesauce ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.  This flavorful applesauce is a great snack, but also can be served alongside roasted chicken, turkey or pork tenderloin and fresh vegetables for a tasty dinner.  When the grocery stores start stocking their produce section with fresh cranberries this season, grab a bag for your family and give this yummy applesauce a try!

Slow Cooker Cranberry Applesauce

Ingredients

  • 5 lbs. Cortland apples (or your favorite baking apples) peeled, cored and chopped
  • 1 (12 oz.) bag fresh cranberries, rinsed
  • 3/4 cup orange juice
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp. allspice
  • 1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Place apples and fresh cranberries into your slow cooker.
  2. Sprinkle with the sugars, cinnamon, allspice and nutmeg.
  3. Pour in the orange juice.
  4. Stir well, so that everything is combined.
  5. Cook for 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low.
  6. Uncover, and with a potato masher, mash the applesauce until you get the consistency you want. If you like your applesauce smoother and less chunky, you can use an immersion blender.
  7. I like to mash mine a little and use an immersion blender on half of the applesauce and I think the texture turns out perfect that way- but it's personal preference:)
  8. You can adjust the sugar to your own taste too!
  9. Let the applesauce cool for 30 minutes and then chill in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
  10. This recipe makes about 8 cups or so of applesauce.
  11. Store leftover applesauce in a large mason jar in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

This looks AMAZING! We’re going to try it this weekend. Can it be canned just like traditional applesauce?

Hi Katie! I have never canned this, but I don’t see why you couldn’t. I have frozen it in plastic freezer friendly containers and that works well too:) Have a great weekend!

Shannon, I’m loving this with the fresh cranberries! This would be good putting this in an applesauce cookie…just an idea for you!
We just found out my little one might be allergic to apples. We have to make sure. It makes him (and me) a bit sad, bcz he LOVES apple sauce! Pinning and sharing on the SSS party board! (=
