Delicious On The Go Meals + Printable Weekly Planner

When schedules at home, at work and with family get busy, it’s sometimes hard to make sure we take care of ourselves. At our house, things can get pretty crazy, pretty fast. My husband and I both run businesses and have 4 active children to take care of. Staying focused, being on track and feeling good helps you be the best you can be! We’ve found that taking just a few minutes at the beginning of the week to plan out our meals, including some delicious on the go options, keeps our week moving smoothly. Making sure you get a good, breakfast, lunch, and dinner along with drinking plenty of water each day is a must to keep you feeling great!

Delicious On The Go Meals + Printable Weekly Planner

Do you drink enough water every day? I use to think that I did, but once I started really keeping track, I realized that I wasn’t getting enough. On my last grocery shopping trip to Walmart, I decided to grab a few nice & big 1L bottles of premium smartwater. smartwater is vapor-distilled for purity, inspired by the clouds, with just the right amount of electrolytes for a uniquely clean taste. I like the sleek packaging that simply reflects the quality that’s inside the bottle. It tastes great and fits easily into your purse, in your gym bag, in your car or in your hand for a walk at the end of a long day.

smartwater bottle

I’m always on the lookout for simple meals with good ingredients that I can keep on hand at home. I also picked up a few different varieties of NEW Healthy Choice® Power Bowls. Delicious, bold flavors include Adobo Chicken Bowl, Cuban-Inspired Pork Bowl, Chicken Sausage And Barley Bowl, and moderately spicy Korean-Inspired Beef Bowl. Yum!

Healthy Choice® & smartwater at Walmart

Healthy Choice’s culinary approach insists that every ingredient matters- and it does! Made with Antibiotic Free Chicken and All Natural USDA Choice Beef, these tasty meals are packed with an intentional balance of vegetables, proteins, and whole grains to fuel your lifestyle. You can find these paleo friendly meals right in your grocer’s freezer section.

Healthy Choice® Power Bowls

When you have spent a little time preparing and thinking about what you will eat for the the week ahead, you’ll find it easy to stay on track trying to stick to a healthier lifestyle.

Cuban-Inspired Pork Bowl

It’s easy to fall into the convenience trap of eating not so good for us foods when life gets hectic. I love having these meals for those busy nights.

Korean-Inspired Beef Bowl

I can get a good, well balanced meal in just minutes that I can feel good about.

Adobo Chicken Bowl

When you eat good you feel good too and it shows!

Chicken Sausage And Barley Bowl

I wanted to share some of my weekly meal planning tricks with you today too! I print out this planner each week and take a few minutes to write down my meals in advance. It really helps me with my grocery shopping trips and there’s no more wondering, “Hmm… what’s for dinner tonight?”

Print yours HERE now and set yourself up for a great week!

How To Make Your Old Playset NEW Again!

Purchasing a playset for your children is a great investment. It provides them with countless hours of outdoor fun & creative play in addition to making great memories. We’ve had our playset for a while now and although it’s still a backyard staple for our 4 kiddos ages 6-14, it’s taken quite a beating over the past few years. This Spring we’re giving our backyard a little makeover and Making our Old Playset NEW Again!

Before Playset Makeover

Many windy, rainy and snowy seasons eventually took it’s toll on the original canopy that once covered the top of our playset. Our children really missed that “shelter” from the sun and the idea that being under cover is well… just more fun!

GAF Roofing Center at Lowe's

My husband and I decided we wanted to build our own roof to make the playset feel and look complete again. After measuring the area, we headed to Lowe’s and found the GAF Roofing Center.

The GAF Roofing Center shows you the different types and colors of shingles available. It was important to us that we use GAF  Timberline Shingles because they not only look good, but they are extremely durable too! These are the best selling shingles in North America and are often used by contractors, but DIY’ers love them just as much!

GAF also stands behind their products and offers a Warranty!

Have you ever installed your own roofing before? If not, start small with a project like this one!

GAF Roofing Materials at Lowe's

For this project you will need:

  • Timberline® shingles (High Definition®, Natural Shadow® or American Harvest®)
  • Pro-Start™FeltBuster® High-Traction Synthetic Roofing Felt FeltBuster®
  • TimberTex® Premium Ridge Cap Shingles OR
  • TimberTex® Seal-A-Ridge® Protective Ridge Cap Shingles
  • Nails: 1 ¼” galvanized steel roofing nails
  • Nails: 1” – 1 ¼” round plastic cap roofing nails
  • (8) 2 x 4’s
  • 1 piece plywood
  • Metal or Aluminum Drip Edge (optional)
  • Tape Measure
  • Hammer
  • Redwood Stain

We chose Timberline® Natural Shadow® shingles in the Charcoal color to match the roofing on our house.

Measure Your Playset Before Shopping & Building

Keep in mind that measurements will be different for all sizes of playsets out there. Measuring accurately will be your key to success here.

Framing the Roof for Playset

We (my husband) started the roof by measuring and cutting ridge board and fascia boards to frame the roof. Since my husband is quite tall, he pulled the back of his pickup truck to the playset to work off of safely. You may use a ladder if needed.

Measure & Cut Rafters for Playset Roof

After cutting an angle on the first 2 x 4 rafter for the roof, that piece becomes a pattern. Use the pattern to correctly cut the remaining 7 rafters. Then screw them into place.

Rafters for Playset Roof

Measure the roof area and cut the plywood to place on top. Nail the plywood onto the rafters to secure. Repeat for the other side of the roof.

Measure the plywood roof area and add drip edge if desired. Then cover the roof with FeltBuster® and secure with round plastic cap roofing nails.

Cover the Playset Roof with FeltBuster

Start a pattern with your Timberline® shingles and complete the first side of the roof. Fill in the field and make any necessary end cuts along the rake edge and ridge.

GAF Roofing Supplies for Playset

Repeat on the other side of the roof. Add the TimberTex® to cap the ridge and secure following package instructions.

Nailing Shingles to Playset Roof

I brushed and rolled the stain onto the worn wood of the Playset and let it dry for 24 hours. Not only does this freshen up the playset and make it look like new, but it helps to protect it as well.

Use Redwood Stain to Freshen Up the Playset's Wood Frame

With the warmer temperatures, I couldn’t wait to add some flowers to this space. I purchased a few simple green plastic flower planters to plant them in to complete the look.

Add Colorful Flowers & Pillows to Your Playset

One final touch- a fun bicycle welcome mat and some colorful striped outdoor pillows for the playhouse! It’s the perfect place to read or play a game!

Old Playset Brought Back to Life!

Our kiddos couldn’t be happier with their “NEW” Playset and it’s perfect timing too… just in time for summer!

Easy Ways to Spruce Up Your Old Playset

So what do you think? In the mood to spruce up your playset? Head to Lowes and make Your Old Playset NEW Again this weekend!

Spring Inspired Ham & Cucumber Sandwiches

Spring is in the air and I just love it! After a winter that could not make up it’s mind, I’m looking forward to a new season with delicious, fresh and light recipes. Because the nicer weather allows so many of us to start those outdoor projects around the house, planning meals can sometimes be an afterthought. Sandwiches always make a simple & easy option for a no hassle lunch or dinner. Celebrate the start of spring with these yummy Ham & Cucumber Sandwiches!

Main Ingredients Spring Ham & Cucumber Sandwiches

A tasty sandwich is never far from reach when you’ve got a few basic ingredients on hand. I always make sure I grab a loaf of Pepperidge Farm Farmhouse™ Hearty White Bread, Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Honey Ham and Hellmann’s® Real Mayonnaise when I’m grocery shopping at Walmart.

Sandwich Ingredients at Walmart

Quality ingredients make all of the difference in a good sandwich. Farmhouse Hearty White bread is slow baked, hearty, and crafted from a simple small batch recipe. It’s wholesome and flavorful ingredients are made into delicious loaves of bread that always have that fresh from the oven taste. You can smell it’s deliciousness as soon as you open the double-wrapped bag. Yum!

Pepperidge Farm Hearty White Bread

Looking for a tasty lunch meat that contains no artificial flavors and no by-products? Look no further than Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Honey Ham lunchmeat. It’s perfect on a piece or 2 of Farmhouse Hearty White with Hellmann’s® Real Mayonnaise.

Cucumbers for Cucumber Mayo

This simple recipe is Spring inspired by adding a few fresh seasonal veggies to your basic ham sandwich.

Crisp and thinly sliced cucumbers along with bright red radishes (if you don’t care for radishes, you may use carrots instead!) will surely dazzle your tastebuds with every bite. An easy to make cucumber mayo pulls all of these seasonal fresh flavors together too!

Making Cucumber Mayo

Get started by chopping up half of a small seedless cucumber, putting it a small glass bowl and sprinkling it with a little sea salt. Let it sit for 30 minutes or so, before draining any excess liquid and using a small chopper or blender to make it smooth.

Spring Inspired Cucumber Mayo on Sandwiches

Add 1 cup of Hellmann’s® Real Mayonnaise to the cucumber puree, stir well and store in a glass mason jar in the refrigerator until you are ready to make your sandwiches. This Cucumber Mayo can be made ahead of time for convenience and used throughout the week.

Take 2 pieces of Farmhouse Hearty White and spread each one with your desired amount of the homemade cucumber mayo.

Layer of Cucumbers on Sandwich

Add a layer of thinly sliced cucumber to the bottom slice of bread for the sandwich, a serving size of Hillshire Farm® Thin Sliced Honey Ham, then a layer of thinly sliced radishes.

Adding Honey Ham to Sandwich

Place the other slice of bread onto the sandwich, slice in half and serve!

I like to have a sandwich night for dinner about once a week once the weather gets nicer. A colorful fruit salad or even a bowl of soup always pair along with it nicely.

Adding Radishes to Sandwich

If your family is short on time or you all just love a good sandwich, give this yummy recipe a try real soon! It may even become a new favorite!

Delicious & Easy to Make Chicken Fajita Soup

With a bitter chill in the air and plenty of snow on the ground, a nice pot of soup simmering on the stove top sure does sound good! Soups are great because you can use a lot of what you have on hand and usually there’s enough to serve a large family for dinner and maybe even lunch the next day. Nothing warms up my taste buds like this delicious Chicken Fajita Soup!

This soup is perfect for a snowy or dreary day! It’s a little heartier than most which is perfect if you have a house full of growing kiddos like mine. It’s full of color and flavor and will definitely brighten your day!

Fresh & Colorful Ingredients for Chicken Fajita Soup

This soup recipe can be made even easier with the help of a rotisserie chicken if you don’t happen to have any shredded or chopped leftover chicken on hand in your refrigerator.

Start by warming a few Tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil in a large stock pot over medium high heat, then start to saute your chopped green peppers, orange peppers, onion and garlic.

Adding Spices to Easy Chicken Fajita Soup

After the vegetables have softened, add 8 cups of chicken or homemade vegetable broth and give everything a good stir. Add a can of fire roasted tomatoes and green chiles with juices, along with your seasonings. Cover and let the soup come to a boil.

Adding Chicken to Chicken Fajita Soup

After you’ve brought the soup to a boil, add your shredded or chopped chicken, the rinsed black beans, and 1 cup of uncooked brown rice. Stir everything, cover and reduce the soup to a simmer for 20 minutes.

Adding Instant Brown Rice to Chicken Fajita Soup

When your timer goes off, add a handful of freshly chopped cilantro and serve hot!

This soup is wonderful with a simple side salad and a fresh loaf of bread from your grocery store’s bakery.

Freezer Friendly Chicken Fajita Soup

If you do happen to have leftover Chicken Fajita Soup (we never do!) you can always freeze it for later! Store the cooled soup in a freezer friendly container or a gallon sized plastic bag to lay flat on a shelf for convenient storage.

Easy Weeknight Dinner Chicken Fajita Soup

I hope you and your family can warm up with this yummy recipe soon! Enjoy!

Slow Cooker Pork Sirloin Roast with Vegetables

These are evenings when I just love my slow cooker. They are the evenings that it’s dark by 5 pm, everyone is really hungry and dinner just happens. It happens because I did the simple prep work earlier in the day, before I had a headache and a billion after school things to handle with my kiddos. Can you relate? This Slow Cooker Pork Sirloin Roast with Vegetables is a simple, well rounded meal that’s just wonderful on a busy weeknight!

Pork Sirloin Roast

Sometimes you may be able to find a nice roast like this marked down in the meat department at your grocery store. It’s nice to have a recipe on hand when you do. Otherwise you may buy it because it’s a good deal and then it sits in your refrigerator, expires and then it’s a waste. Don’t waste it!

I use this neat Slow Cooker that features a removable insert that is stove top safe. It’s perfect for searing meats or sautéing vegetables before slow cooking, without me having to dirty another pan. If you don’t have one, that’s ok too.

Adding Vegetables to Sirloin Roast Meal

I start by heating a little oil in the bottom of the insert. I season the pork roast and when the oil and pan are nice and hot, I place it inside.

That sizzling sound, that nice crust on the meat locking in all of that flavor… totally worth the extra few minutes! I use tongs to easily move the roast and sear each side of it. Then everything gets added right to the slow cooker.

Slow Cooker Pork Roast with Vegetables for Dinner

I add a bag of frozen fine green beans (you can also use fresh green beans), carrots, Cremini mushrooms, sliced onion, freshly minced garlic, a little chicken broth and a few bay leaves before covering and cooking on high for 5 to 6 hours.

Fluffy Brown Rice

I like to serve this over tender brown rice, which you can even make the night before if you want to save even more time in the kitchen. It’s delicious and simple & I hope your family will enjoy this recipe on a busy weeknight too!

Last Minute Decor Ideas for the Holidays

Hello friends! Have you been busy getting ready for the holidays? Me too! There’s the shopping, the gift wrapping, and the cookie baking that take up a lot of our time this season. One thing that’s always been really important to me is creating a cozy and inviting place for our family and friends to gather and enjoy one another’s company. Since time isn’t always on our side, I’m sharing some of my favorite Last Minute Decor Ideas for the Holidays with you!

Snow Covered Trees

A few months ago, I shared a Home Tour that included our NEW Colebrook Dining Set from Raymour & Flanigan! I am in love with this table and so is my family! It’s the perfect size for our larger family and guests. We’ve had extended family parties and it’s so nice to have everyone seated at just one table. When I started decorating our home for the holidays this year I couldn’t wait to see how this rustic table would pull the whole room together. But I saved that part for last…

The beautiful snow covered trees outside right outside our window was the perfect backdrop along with a little Christmas music to get me into a festive mood.

Hand Carved Deer on Mantle

I started with our mantle and built in shelving. I hung lit greenery across the top, added a mirror to open the space and these 2 beautiful wooden and hand crafted deer for a simple but rustic look to work off of.

Filling Shelves with Wood for the Fireplace

If you have a fireplace in your home and a spare shelf, fill it with some of your chopped wood! The wood adds a warm element to your room (especially with today’s popular cool color palettes) while also keeping the wood dry and ready for one of those cozy, spur of the moment winter fires!

Christmas Tree with Rustic Touches

I kept our tree pretty simple too adding pinecone garland with berries, gold & glittered reindeer, white flowers and red ribbon bows here and there. I carried the red around the room by adding real poinsettia flowers on a few shelves and with our red velvet, much loved family tree skirt.

Over the past few years, I had been storing and rotating my seasonal china on the open built in shelving by our fireplace. I was searching for a piece that could not only display them nicely but that would hold all of my special dishes and glassware year round. Well, guess what? I found it! We’ve just added the matching Colebrook China Cabinet to our dining room and it’s just perfect!

Not only does this piece look great, but it really does have room for everything! No more asking myself, “Now, where did I put that?”

Spacious Colebrook Rustic China Cabinet

This cabinet also has a really neat feature… 3 way touch lights! With a simple touch of the bronze hinge on the glass door, the lights go on! Storage in Colebrook China Cabinet I didn’t waste anytime putting my extra Christmas dishes and glasses in this cabinet. I was also able to store my table linens in the deep drawers and neatly store smaller things like my coasters, wine charms and napkin rings in the smaller felt lined drawers. If you have a china cabinet or hutch at home, simply adding a few small potted trees adds a seasonal touch and pop of fresh color without hassle.

Now I told you I saved the best for last… the table! It’s important that your “tablescape” makes a statement in your room, but also allows you and your guests plenty of room to eat too.

Simple Dining Room Table Decor

I was having a hard time deciding on how to decorate this long table. It’s hard to find runners for a table 9 feet long and I didn’t want to cover up the character of this piece with a tablecloth either. I little trip to the craft store solved my problem. I found this 9 ft. roll of burlap for only $7!

Candles with Pinecones

I rolled it across the middle of our table and topped it with bendable greenery and placed cinnamon scented pinecones around it. I filled 3 large glass candle holders with a few more small pinecones before adding the candles too. I found this really nice battery operated string of warm glow lights that I wove into the branches of the greenery for a little more ambiance as well.

Simple Holiday Table Setting

Rustic bronze and gold charger plates sat beneath my cream and white colored plates that held red sparkly napkins in pinecone napkin rings. If you have china collecting dust in your cupboard- don’t be afraid to get it out! You can still have a simple and casual table setting with them!

For even more seating, I pulled the sitting chair from my office and placed it next to the fireplace along with the comfortable rocker my grandmother gave me.

Cozy Chair by Christmas Tree

You can make your seating look inviting by draping a soft cable knit or sherpa lined throw across the arm of the chairs and accent it with fluffy, holiday inspired pillows.

Girls Hanging Ornaments

Now that this space is finally ready for festivities, it was time to hang our “special” ornaments on the Christmas tree! My children each have their own engraved ornament that they received on their first Christmas.

Boys Hanging Ornaments

They are really special and are always the last magical touch we add to our decor each year to make our home complete! No matter how big or small your space is this holiday season, make it your own by using things that mean something to you and your family.

Wishing you a wonderful Holiday filled with love,

Shannon Signature

How to Throw a Holiday Wine Tasting Party this Season

The Holidays are a very special time. It’s a time of year filled with joy, love and laughter. It’s also a time of the year filled with several parties. I don’t know about you, but sometimes after a Holiday party, especially a large one, I feel like I really didn’t get to spend a lot of time talking and enjoying everyone’s company. This year I wanted to change that, so I decided to throw a Holiday Wine Tasting Party!

Our Wine Tasting Party was small, intimate, and one of the best parties I’ve been to in a long time if I do say so myself!

A Wine Tasting Party doesn’t have to be fancy to be a success. It can be simple, casual, and cozy.

I kept our guest list small- under 10 adult guests. Since this was a casual party, I sent out a quick invite via text message, but you can send out a little card if you like too.

Sutter Home Family Vineyards Wine for Wine Tasting Party

The next step was to purchase the wine I wanted to serve at the party. I found some of my favorite Sutter Home Family Vineyard Wine right our local liquor store. You’ll want a variety of whites, blushes and reds ranging from sweet to dry as well.

Sutter Home Family Vineyards is a family-owned company. For three generations they have sought to produce quality products that bring people together to share good times. They’ve even received over 350 gold metals since 2004!

For 65 years, Sutter Home has provided award-winning California wines at affordable prices which gives new wine users confidence that every single bottle of Sutter Home will always deliver consistent quality and value.

Say Cheers! with Sutter Home Wine

I purchased bottles of Sutter Home White Zinfandel, Sutter Home Chardonnay, Sutter Home Moscato, Sutter Home Pink Moscato, Sutter Home Pinot Grigio, Sutter Home Merlot and Sutter Home Cabernet Sauvignon.

I even found these adorable small bottles of Pink Moscato that I knew would be perfect for my party favor gift bags! Aren’t they cute?!

Sutter Home Pink Moscato in Gift Bags for Favors

Decor was simple because I chose to hold the party in our dining room which was already decorated for the season. With a cozy fireplace and plenty of seating, it was the perfect space in our home to set up.

Wine Tasting Party Appetizers and Favors

I wanted to make this room as inviting as possible, so I added a few throw pillows and blankets in sitting chairs and added tiny warm lights around the “bar” (the buffet) area for some ambiance.

Rustic Slate Coasters for Wine Tasting Party

Your wine should be the star of the show, but you should also have appetizers available as well.

Meat & Cheese Tray for Wine Party

I set out a tray of savory Italian meats wrapped around fresh Mozzarella (which was a huge hit by the way…) along with cheeses, grapes, several different cracker varieties, and nuts.

Cracker Tray for Wine Tasting Party

Of course there was also a dessert tray with chocolates and shortbread! Yum!

Dessert Appetizer Tray for Wine Tasting

Because your guests may want to cleanse their palette in between tastings, it’s nice to have water available. I filled a large glass dispenser with water and fresh cranberries for a festive touch.

Simple & Festive Cranberry Water for Holiday Party

Right before my guests arrived, I chilled the wine, set out the glasses, rustic slate coasters, turned on some Holiday music and made sure I had my wine openers and pours ready.

Opening Sutter Home Wine for Holiday Party

Everyone found a spot around the table, started mingling and munching on the tasty appetizers!

Pouring Sutter Home Wine for Tasting Party

I started by standing at the end of the table, opening each bottle of wine, then reading a brief description along with the tasting notes (located on the back of the bottle) for each Sutter Home Family Vineyards Wine.

Enjoying Wine & Time with Friends and Family

Then I poured the wine into everyone’s glasses, we swirled, smelled and tasted! We had then had a casual an open discussion about each wine and what we liked about it.

Pouring Wine for Wine Tasting Party

I can’t remember the last time I spent an entire afternoon with close friends and family like this! We had some great conversations and really enjoyed every moment.

I didn’t feel frazzled and being able to mingle and relax with my guests made me a great host!

My favorite- Sutter Home Family Vineyards Merlot

When everyone was ready to leave, I handed out my favor bags filled with wine and chocolates as a thank you! Each guest left with a new favorite wine and it was a wonderful way for us to kick off our Holiday season! I think we may make this party a NEW tradition each year!

Happy Holidays from our Home to Yours! Cheers!

If you love wine and are looking for a great way to get together with your close adult family & friends this season with out all of the hassle, throw a Holiday Wine Tasting Party like this one! You’ll be so happy you did! Cheers!
