Triple Chocolate M & M Brownies

June 29, 2013 by Shannon

It’s that time again.  The weekend!  I try to make a yummy, but simple dessert every weekend for my family’s movie night.  Lately, I have been making cookie bar or brownie type desserts because they are so easy to make and the children love to help out making them.  I was in the mood this week for some chocolate, so these chewy Triple Chocolate M & M Brownies really hit the spot.  They are loaded with cocoa powder, special dark chocolate, semi sweet chocolate and of course M & M’s.  These are amazing when they are warm right out of the oven and served with a nice big glass of ice cold milk.  This is the perfect recipe for a family get together or picnic and the M & M colors can be changed for different holidays or occasions.  What simple, but delicious sweet treats do you like to whip up in your kitchen on the weekends?

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2/3 cup Crisco shortening
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 egg white
  • 2 1/2 tsp. vanilla
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup good cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup Hershey's special dark chocolate chips
  • 1 cup semi sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup regular M&M's
  • 1/4 cup mini chocolate chips for garnish
  • 1/4 cup M&Ms for garnish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Sift together the dry ingredients- the flour, cocoa, soda, and salt and set aside.
  3. In a Kitchen Aid Mixer, cream the butter, shortening and sugars until fluffy.
  4. Add the eggs, the egg white, and the vanilla and mix well.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients and mix until just combined, being sure to scrape down the edges of the bowl.
  6. Mix in the dark chocolate, semi sweet chocolate, and the M&M's.
  7. Spread the batter into a 9 x 13 baking dish.
  8. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a tooth pick inserted into the brownies comes out clean.
  9. Sprinkle the extra M&M's and the mini chocolate chips on top of the warm brownies.
  10. Let cool for at least 20 minutes before cutting and serving.
  11. May be served warm or at room temperature with milk:)
  12. Makes 24 brownies.
