Repurposed Can Herb Planters

April 22, 2013 by Shannon

Good Morning everyone!  Happy Earth Day!  Today I am celebrating Earth day by sharing with you these simple Repurposed Herb Planters that can be made with tomato cans.  You can make these out of any sized cans you would like to recycle, but I chose to use these 28 oz. cans for this project.  I wanted to display these on my window sill over my kitchen sink and these seemed to be the perfect size.  For larger plantings, I think large coffee cans would also work great.  You will want to use a smooth edge can opener so that you don’t cut yourself when working with these, then wash your cans and set them aside until you are ready to make these.  Make sure you are in a well ventilated area when spray painting.  Set up your cans and spray them the desired color.

While the cans are drying, cut out your numbers with a Cricut machine.  I usually use my Cricut for scrapbooking, but I am finding that I can use it for SO much more!  If you do not have a Cricut, you can always print out a number in whatever font you like on your printer and use a crafting knife to cut it out and use as a stencil.

I suggest using painters tape to adhere the stencil, as it probably won’t pull of any paint when you remove the stencil.  I, however did not think of that, so I had to touch up a few spots!  Try and get the stencil as flat as possible.  It can be a little tricky because the cans are rounded, so just tape underneath any parts of the number that stick up.  I used an up and down motion when spraying the numbers so I minimized the paint getting onto the base color.  Let the paint dry and then remove the stencils.  Fill the cans with potting soil and plant your herbs:)

Now you can enjoy fresh herbs right from your kitchen.  You can always transplant these outdoors when they are larger and start new herbs from seed in these planters.  How are you celebrating Earth Day?

Shannon, I love these! I am attempting a TINY veggie garden this summer, and this would be great for some herbs. I don’t have a green thumb, but I’m determined to grow my own basil, at least!

Hi Kristen! I love basil….actually the one in the planter has gotten pretty big, so I am going to transplant it outdoors now, but I bet you could plant basil from seed really well on the window sill like that! I love when the plants are by the sink…it’s a constant reminder that I need to water them:)

    Shannon,

First thanks for sharing at What’d You Do This Weekend? Second, I want your kitchen window – herb planters and all. That is a beautiful picture.

Maybe I missed it, but did you put drain holes in the bottoms of the cans? That is always the problem I have with indoor plants. The drainage thing. I’m a neat nut and dripping water from the plants drives me nuts!

    Have a great week,

    Linda

Thanks Linda:) I actually didn’t poke drain holes in these, but before I put the soil in I put some small stones/gravel in the bottom and that helps. I am just careful when I water, not to over water because I hate the mess too!
