Cozy Kitchen Nook Makeover

September 26, 2014 by Shannon

Fall is here and I couldn’t be more excited! It’s my favorite season because I love the chill in the air, the beautiful colors of the leaves and the feeling of a cozy home. This time of year I spend less time outdoors and more time inside, preparing for the upcoming Winter trying to make our home cozy, warm and welcoming for family & friends. Of course I like to do this with food! The smell of a savory beef stew simmering on the stove top or a homemade apple pie baking in the oven always brings everyone to the table on a chilly Fall day. The problem our family has been having is that our new country home has a very small kitchen nook. Since we are large family of 6, this makes it very difficult for us to eat our meals together comfortably. With the help of Raymour & Flanigan, that has now changed!

Our very worn but loved Oak Table had seen better days. This table was really sturdy, well built and stood up to four children banging utensils, coloring and spilling things all over it. The varnish was worn and peeling, and I almost hated looking at it in that tiny space because it wasn’t a nice place to gather anymore. We had purchased the table at a garage sale and it really served it’s purpose when our family was still very young, but we desperately needed to update for the space we are now in.

One of our oak chairs had broken and I was using my grandmother’s cedar chest for a bench type seat to accommodate everyone. My husband is 6’7″ and with our children growing tall like him, we were eating our meals in shifts which made me sad. I wanted to enjoy my family over a delicious home cooked meal and feel like everyone was comfortable. I got online and started looking for tables at Raymour & Flanigan. I quickly found the perfect table and I knew it was going to completely change our family’s kitchen nook and meal time for the better.

I made a list of other items I really liked and then visited our local Raymour & Flanigan Showroom to look at the table in person before I ordered it. I was so surprised at all of the options they had available for different sized rooms. The manager and friendly staff worked very closely with me to ensure that everything was going to work well for my space.  My items were delivered within a week and they even set everything up for me!

The Kenton II 5 Piece Counter Height Dining Set was was perfect! I purchased 2 extra chairs and it gave all of us more leg room by going up instead of out and also allowed us to enjoy what was outside our window too. The creamy white antique finish brightened up the small space, while the warm wood top kept the nook feeling warm and welcoming. The Wild Grass added a nice splash of color and fresh feel to the space as well!

This table also has a fold in leaf which I was the most excited about. Since our space is limited, I didn’t have to worry about storing it anywhere else, it is always right there, but out of the way! When I was browsing around the store, I spotted this lovely Red Teapot Lantern that I just had to have. It adds a nice hint of color to the eating area and creates a cozy ambiance if we have a candle lit inside it on a gloomy evening.

I now wanted to add a few decorative items to make this nook feel even more inviting. I added a multi colored Area Rug that also lightened the space but added texture to the floor and made it feel warm and comfortable on chilly evenings.

I hung these beautiful Rustic Iron Sconces with Amber Glass on the sides of this lovely framed Pear Artwork on the wall to add some interest and personality to the space.

I always like to display different things on the table or window sill throughout the year. I just had to have these Large Wooden Pears! They came in a large wooden basket for a variety of display options. They were so unique and looked simply gorgeous set out on the small window sill with the natural light shining around and in between them.

Because we love the country, I just couldn’t go without these adorable Canvon Chickens either! They are hand painted and when they are on the center of our table it pulls the colors from the area rug all through the room. They are fun and really can be placed anywhere in my home.

This new space means the world to me. I am so happy I am able to enjoy my family and eat our meals together comfortably now. I really didn’t think I was going to be able to make this a place we where we would want to be, but it’s quickly becoming one of our favorite rooms. If you have a small space that you think can’t be helped, head over to Raymour & Flanigan’s website, or visit your closest Raymour & Flanigan Showroom to really see what options are available to you. Get inspired and make a change in your home that will help bring your family together. Because of their superior customer service and attention to detail, I will definitely be making another trip to Raymour & Flanigan when I furnish our new living room. I can’t wait!

I love the look of the after picture. I love the table. We have a long square table and right now I feel it’s to big in my kitchen.
