September Family Reading

September 12, 2013 by Shannon

I love sharing recipes here on Cozy Country Living.  While I spend the majority of my time in the kitchen, there’s so much more that goes on in my home during the day.   In the coming weeks, along with recipes, I will be sharing some great family ideas, DIY projects/crafts, gardening and other bits and pieces from my everyday life.

Today I wanted to share my family’s September reading list.   I am very fortunate to have a playroom in my home and it’s great to have a room dedicated to all of the children’s toys and books.  Our playroom also has a nice, cozy fireplace.  We only use this fireplace on special occasions, but I love the mantel and I line it with different books each month.  Over the past 10 years our family has collected a great number of different books for all ages.  They have their place on a bookshelf, but every month I pick out a few that I think relate to the month we are in.  My children look forward to the new selections every month and it gives new life to books that may have been forgotten about when they were last placed on the shelf.  I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard, “Oh my gosh, I forgot we had that book!”    My children range in age from 10 to 2, so I pick a few  books that my older readers can read and then a few that I can read to everyone.  Even though my older children are able to read these books, it’s always nice to sit down in the evening and have a book read to you.  Hey, I would love it if someone would read me a book:)

Our Family’s September Reading Nook features:

The Giving Tree

A Grand Old Tree

Ten Apples Up On Top!

From Seed to Pumpkin

Fall Is for Friends

Colorful Leaves

Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten

One Red Apple

What are some of your family’s favorite Fall books?

There are many electronic distractions today, so I think it’s refreshing to sit down with an actual book, use your imagination and get lost in a story.  I try to encourage more reading time at our home and during the school week no electronics are allowed.  I like to sit down with each of my children every month and ask them what types of books they would like to be reading. Sometimes they are interested in a certain character or theme.  Choose Your Own Adventure type books and mystery books also seem to keep my young readers interested.  I try to make sure I have a lot of books available to them that might peak their interests.  I’ve found that if it is something they like, they will read it.  Don’t forget that yard sales, thrift stores, online sales and of course the public library are excellent, frugal ways to build your own at home library.

My children’s reading nook often inspires me to do a little more reading of my own!  Have you read any good books lately?  I would love some great recommendations!
