Spring is here and I’m looking forward to a beautiful and productive garden again this year. Gardening really is a great hobby, and if you really put forth the effort, it can provide you with delicious, fresh food all year round. All 4 of my children spend a lot of time with me in our garden. It’s a great opportunity to bond, learn about nature and get creative with your kiddos every single day. It’s so fun too! We have several raised beds and plant all sorts of delicious vegetables from Spring until Fall. Although the skies are sunny and the temperatures are in the 60’s today, unfortunately there are snowflakes in our local forecast this weekend. No worries though- we’re starting our family gardening this year rain (snow) or shine indoors with Miracle-Gro Gro-ables! Miracle-Gro Gro-ables are an easy, less messy way to start gardening. Growing your own fruits and vegetables is so rewarding. Everyone always wants to taste those fresh fruits & veggies after they’ve worked so hard caring for them all season! Not only are they adorable, but they really do make gardening a little easier, especially when it’s time to pull weeds! My youngest daughter loves to put on her special gardening gloves and get working! She was really excited to help me plant this week because she only goes to school for 1/2 a day. It’s nice to have a little special one on one time with her too. To get started with the Miracle-Gro Gro-ables, I purchased a few pretty ceramic pots (the one’s that have a built in tray for convenience) that I could keep on my large kitchen window sill. We lightly filled the pots with good potting mix and placed the seed pods into the mix until the tops were level with it. There are also easy to follow direction under each label. We chose to plant 3 different varieties of tomatoes, 1 in each small planter and 3 pepper Gro-ables in the smaller separate planters as well. These need to be started indoors anyways and then they can be transplanted to the garden in 6 weeks. In our large planter, we planted herbs next to each other. This fragrant herb garden is going to be just beautiful to have in our kitchen this summer! After watering daily for 1-2 weeks your seeds will finally sprout! Several months after we’ve planted these, flowers will soon begin to appear which means fruit will be close at hand! Yum! How exciting! Make gardening a priority for your family this year! This week the snow just wouldn’t stop! Living south of Buffalo we are use to cold & snowy winters, but it’s always something to see when 12 inches of snow or more fall within a 24 hour period. Winter is beautiful around here and a blanket of sparkling snow always makes for a cozy landscape when you are warm inside. This time of year can get pretty crazy. Sometimes it can be downright overwhelming. It’s important to take a step back though and live in the moment. Take a few hours on a weekend morning and really enjoy your family. Push that to do list to the side and start the morning with some family time and these delicious (and easy) Dark Chocolate & Peppermint Holiday Pancakes!

My kiddos love pancakes! It doesn’t matter what the occasion, they are always up for a hot stack in the morning! Since the holidays are upon us, I thought it would be fun to plan a special “pancake breakfast” at our house. To help make this breakfast even more special, I enlisted the help of my children to help set the table and Aunt Jemima to help out with the recipe!

Aunt Jemima Original Pancake Mix is the perfect thing to have on hand to whip up a tasty family breakfast. I grabbed a few boxes on my last grocery shopping trip to Walmart to have on hand for the busy upcoming holiday season.

I love that this mix helps me quickly make delicious, light and fluffy, simple pancakes for special breakfast.

If we want to get creative we can add in some of our favorite, fruits, nuts or chocolates, like we did with this recipe! For years, Aunt Jemima has helped busy families enjoy great tasting pancakes for breakfasts and brunches.

For this recipe, I prepared Aunt Jemima’s Original Pancake Mix according to the package instructions, then stirred in special dark chocolate cocoa, semi sweet chocolate chips and peppermint baking chips. This time of year I always have those extra holiday ingredients on hand, so there was no last minute trips to the store to get this yummy breakfast started.

After everything was combined well, I cooked these on a hot griddle. Oh… the chocolate and the peppermint together smelled so delicious as these fluffed up and cooked!

After all of your pancakes are cooked, top them with whipped cream, crushed candy canes and garnish with a mini candy cane on the side for a nice touch!

I like to let everyone put on their own toppings even if it does get a little messy! It’s always more fun that way. Don’t  forget about the syrup though! Aunt Jemima Syrup drizzled on top of these makes them even more wonderful!

My children just loved these! Not only were they delicious, but the whole family can participate in preparing them from start to finish too. By the way- these are freezer friendly too! You can make a huge batch and pull them out and reheat them in the microwave for a morning when you are short on time!

It’s the simple things like this that make the best memories during the holidays! Don’t they look festive?!

Can you believe it’s October already?! The weather is undoubtedly Fall like and my children are talking about Halloween. We’ve pulled the big costume bin out of the attic and everyone has been putting together the ultimate costume for this year’s Trick-or-Treating. I’m not a huge fan of scary decor for Halloween, but pumpkins and cute kid-friendly decorative accents and activities are always on my to do list. Whether you are throwing a Halloween party yourself, or bringing a treat into school, these Cute Mummy Halloween Favors are sure to be a hit! Instead of just putting our Halloween candy into a bowl this year, we’re dumping out the candy and getting creative with these cups! My children were so excited to add their own personal touch on these! This is the perfect craft to get your family into the Halloween spirit! Americans of all ages (adults too!) like to celebrate the mystery of Halloween while attending or throwing their very own Halloween parties!

First you’ll need a few supplies:

• Small colored paper or plastic cups (we liked the green ones)
• Eyes from a craft store
• Glue Dots
• Glue Stick
• White Rolls of Gauze
• Halloween Stickers
• Halloween Pencils
• Hershey Halloween Candy

Set up your crafting supplies on a large table and have everyone pull up a chair! With the glue stick start getting the cup nice and sticky. Work your way around the cup leaving a little space for eyes while wrapping the cup with the gauze and pressing and rubbing to ensure the gauze adheres well. When you are finished, cut the excess gauze off with scissors. After the gauze is on, choose your mummy’s eyes and glue them on with a glue dot.  Now for the really fun part… filling your Halloween Mummy Cups with goodies!

I like to put the pencils in first and then alternate with some glittery, fun stickers and of course that delicious chocolate.  If there’s a treat my children are constantly requesting over the summer, it’s ice cream. On the weekends, I usually purchase a few different flavored ice cream to make cones for everyone. It’s a tasty treat that never gets old. Last week I shared a few fun items I picked up during my last grocery trip when I was Shopping For Fun This Summer for a secret party I was planning. This week, during a normal summer afternoon, I surprised my little guys with a fun Ice Cream Sundae Party and boy were they excited!

As a busy wife and mother, I sometimes forget that simple things like a picking your favorite toppings for a sundae or creating your own unique recipe can make their day. It’s exciting to have “your pick” of toppings all set out on a table for you to choose from. After lunch when things had calmed down a bit, I quietly set up our party.

Before I got everything out, I told my kiddos we were going to do something special, but that I wanted them to draw a picture of what their dream sundaes would look like first. I got them set up in the other room, they got out their crayons and started drawing. This was the perfect opportunity for me to sneak out and set up our Sundae Making Station.

When their drawings were finished, so was the Sundae Bar! You should have seen the looks on their faces when I said, “Okay, let’s make the sundaes you drew right now!”

I let each child, youngest to oldest prepare their own special treats. After scanning over the different Smucker’s® Ice Cream Toppings I had out, they were ready, and very, very serious about their recipes too!

Here’s some of the “recipes” they came up with:

S’mores Sundae: Chocolate ice cream, Smucker’s® Marshmallow Topping, crushed graham crackers & chocolate chips

Hot Fudge & Caramel Banana Split: Vanilla ice cream, a banana, Smucker’s® Hot Fudge Topping, Smucker’s® Caramel Topping, chocolate chips and maraschino cherries

Chocolate Chip Sprinkled Hot Fudge Sundae: Vanilla ice cream, Smucker’s® Hot Fudge Topping, chocolate chips and sprinkles

I had a little taste of each one and they were all pretty good! With several toppings left, we are sure to have plenty of yummy ice cream desserts on our menu the rest of the summer.

As a matter of fact, I think my husband and I will have to make ourselves a sundae before we sit down and watch one of our favorite shows tonight!

All of these toppings really have got my kids thinking too. They already have plans for a big Ice Cream Sundae Contest this weekend! Sounds good because it’s going to be sunny & hot! What a perfect way to end the day!

It’s Sunday and that means that it’s time to plan a few fun things for my family for the upcoming week. With a few rainy days in our forecast here and back-to-school time drawing near, it’s more important than ever for me to make sure that my family spends some quality time together. This week we are planning a Movie Date. We are taking the whole family to a matinee see the Shaun The Sheep Movie!

The Shaun The Sheep Movie is coming to theaters near you this Wednesday, August 5th and our family couldn’t be more excited! Geared toward children ages 4-10, this family friendly movie is about a sheep named Shaun who decides to take the day off and have some fun. He gets a little more action than he bargained for with a mix up with a Farmer, a caravan, and a very steep hill that leads all of them to the Big City. It’s then up to Shaun and the whole flock to return everyone safely to the green grass of home.

Not only is this movie made even more adorable using Claymation for it’s animation, but the characters all have such interesting personalities. They work together promoting teamwork, leadership and problem solving. I’m sure each member of your family will have their own favorite character!

I think that it’s hard these days to find a movie that the whole family can enjoy together. This movie is so unique not only in it’s appearance, especially with these charming and fun sheep, but also in it’s message. Last week I shared my pledge to Go #DarkForDinner with you all in hopes that you would join the movement too! I hope you did! Sitting down for dinner with your family and having no distractions from your phone, television, etc. can be the most important part of your day, and the part you can look forward to the most.  I think that we don’t even realize we’re are distracted. We’re so used to carrying our phone with us everywhere we go for emails, social media and calls that it has become second nature to bring it along to the dinner table with us too and that’s not good. Not only are we missing out on quality time and conversation with our families, but we’re also not giving ourselves a well needed break from the day. Let’s let it go…

When I made plans to Go #DarkForDinner, I let my family know well in advance. We planned a cookout and my children were really excited! Who doesn’t love a cookout?! My kiddos think it’s really special when we eat outside and they asked me everyday until Sunday if today was the day we were having our special dinner. The skies were rainy and then sunny on and off all day long, but I was so happy that the second round of rain held off until after dinner!

My older children helped me prepare the Hot Dogs, Hamburgers, Fresh Fruit Salad, Creamy Tuna Macaroni Salad, Lemonade and Strawberry & Basil Shortcakes. We even cut some of the fresh flowers from around our home to make a lovely centerpiece for the table. My younger children helped to set the table, which we made really easy with Dixie’s colorful plates and bowls. I love having an easy cleanup!

Since parts of the day on Sunday were sunny, after we prepared the food, we did some work outside, around the house and in my garden. Ending the day cooking on the grill, enjoying the breeze while having our planned cookout for our Sunday Dinner worked out great. Everyone was really hungry and couldn’t wait to dig in!

I really enjoyed not using my camera or checking my phone throughout our whole dinner. I think sometimes I just take out my phone and look at it because it’s a habit. It’s not like I need to that often, and it does get to be a distraction. While we enjoyed our #DarkForDinner meal, we went around the table and asked everyone what their plans were for summer and what ideas everyone had for a few family fun activities we could do. Sleeping in, playing basketball, playing outside and picking fruit and vegetables from our garden were the most popular ideas. I loved their simple ideas!

Sometimes things don’t have to be complicated – they are just that simple and that’s great. I don’t like over scheduling our children because you can easily lose track of the small things that are so important in their childhood and it’s not going to last forever.

After dinner, of course there was a lot of goofing around, because, well…my kids are goofy!

Quality family time is priceless!

They burned off a little more energy riding their bikes and shooting some hoops, but then we all had to go in. More rain was on it’s way, it was a getting a little buggy and it was a school night! Only 2 more weeks of school and then it’s summer vacation! They can’t wait!

Things around the house during the end of the school year get really busy here. Adding sports practices, concerts and field trips to getting my yard, garden and patio ready for the season, sometimes doesn’t allow for much “family time”. Dinner is one of the few times every day that our family is able to be together and enjoy each other’s company – even if it is only for a half an hour. This Sunday, along with Dixie, I am participating in the #DarkForDinner Movement!

Even though our family does it’s best to sit down together for dinner each night, it’s not always distraction free. My husband runs a business, I run a business, and sometimes our phones make their way to the dinner table with us and we are distracted. Email alerts, social media and sometimes even personal calls end up taking our attention away from what is truly important. Our family, our dinner together and conversation. Of course we don’t purposely mean to do that, but when we do, we aren’t really present. Our children are 12, 10, 7 and 4, so we really don’t have electronic distractions from them yet. I hate to say it, but the problem lies with us and it sets a bad example!

My children love exploring.  It’s a different adventure everyday.  Every season offers different flowers, plants, animals and weather.  If it’s raining, so what!  It can be messy, dirty, muddy and wet, but my family just loves it!  Especially our boys.

If they see mud, they head right for it.  A patch of soft moss, they want to get right down on the ground and touch it.  Going outdoors is always a sensory experience and most often my little one’s favorite part of the day!

After our long winter this year, we are enjoying picking flowers (even if they are dandelions!), watching the growth of our flowers and the buds on our trees starting to change into leaves.  It’s almost magical how everything blooms and awakens in the Spring!

It’s no secret that my girls just love American Girl.  When were on vacation in Florida last month, we had a chance to visit the new American Girl store in Orlando at the Florida Mall.  This was our first trip to an American Girl store, so this was really an exciting event!  We purchased Grace: Girl of the Year.  She’s a very pretty doll and she loves to bake!  This past weekend my girls and I got creative in the kitchen with our new Holstein Housewares Cake Bites Maker and made tasty treats inspired by Grace’s & our love of baking!

My youngest really, really wanted to eat hers right away, but we had to wait until after dinner!

Of course as the smell of freshly baked cake filled the kitchen, my boys made their way downstairs to see what was going on and after dinner we shared all of our pretty cake bites with them.

This activity was so much fun and it didn’t make a big mess or take the whole day either.  My girls have already requested to have another baking day in the near future.  They’ve also got big plans on making fun Cake Pops for upcoming holidays too.  Yum!
