Last week I was having a quiet lunch inside with the windows open. My youngest was napping and I was enjoying the quiet that comes along with living in the country. No background noise, birds chirping and the soft creaking of my wooden garden gate every now and then as it swung open and shut as the wind blew.

As I sipped on my iced tea, and crushed a small ice cube between my teeth, I glanced out the window and watched the shadows of the leaves from the trees seeming to dance across the green grass along with peaks of bright sunshine. I love that. It reminds me of my grandparents house. I spent every summer there as a child and I have so many amazing, but simple memories of my time there. Looking back, I’m glad even as a child, I took time to recognize simple moments in my childhood. It’s those moments that find their way into your life even decades later.

All of those big trees that shaded my grandparents neatly landscaped yard so perfectly always came with a little clean up. My grandfather in his everyday simple white v- neck t- shirt, shorts and brown slippers, would carry an old plastic heavy duty garbage can from the garage and place it into the middle of the yard. Then it was “clean up sticks time!”

My brother, sister and I never complained, and along with my grandfather and his sweet dog Pumpkin, we picked up every last stick until the yard was back to picture perfect clean. We usually ended our little clean up session with a game of baseball. I still remember the sound that big red plastic bat made as it hit the over sized white hard plastic ball. Whap….

I have nothing but happy memories from those summers. It was home to me.

Fast forward a few short years and that sweet man who gave me so much love was quickly being taken away from us by cancer.

I remember riding my bike with my cousin one warm summer afternoon when I was 15. We were near my grandparents and I wanted to stop by.  I’m glad we did. I wanted to spend time with time with him when I could. I remember knowing even then not to take time for granted.

My grandparents were sitting at their kitchen table. My grandmother got us all a cold glass of water and we just sat there and talked. We talked about every day things, as the pretty flowers in a planter right outside the window and the American flag gently swayed in the breeze. We talked about what we were doing that day, what activities I had coming up the next week and then plans for the upcoming school year- high school for me in the Fall.

That’s when I felt like someone punched me in the chest and sucked every last ounce of air out of my lungs. I wanted to cry so hard and hug my grandpa forever.

This man who was always there for me, was never bothered by me, who was strong, kind, generous and who was like a father to me broke down in a heavy cry right there in front of me. He wouldn’t be here in the Fall.

I ached all over.

My grandmother placed her hand on his shoulder and he wiped his eyes with both hands underneath his glasses and took a sip of water.

We stayed a little longer and then hopped back on our bikes riding underneath the same beautiful shadows of big trees and sunlight that I loved so much.

That was 19 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday. That painful memory, when it comes up, is always quickly set aside for a happier one like picking strawberries, wrapping his black and silver wavy hair in to a hundred pastel hair ties, enjoying homemade apple crisp together for breakfast just because, being pushed on the swing at the playground across the street or sitting on his lap reaching up and touching his face as he read me my favorite book that had been read so many times throughout the years that it was held together with piece of tape at the top seam.

Every moment matters. Today matters. What you do, how you treat others and how you make others feel matters. My grandfather taught me that. We don’t know how long we will be here. Make the time that you are here, everyday, matter to someone. You will not ever have the chance to get those moments back either.

My grandfather always use to sing me the song, “You are my sunshine.”

He was my sunshine.

On days like today, I see him. He’s in the peaks of sunshine in between the shadows of the leaves as they dance across the green grass.

This weekend, thank the special fathers in your life and make every moment matter because you just don’t know how many you have.

Yesterday started out just like any other day of the week. I got all 4 children off to school, finished a few household chores and drank a cup of coffee while I did a little work in my office before heading off to the grocery store. I’m not as rushed these days shopping as I was when I had little ones in tow, but I am still on a schedule with my youngest’s half days of school. As I took my time pushing the cart up and down the aisles looking and thinking about what I needed (I forgot my list), an older man stopped me and politely asked for my help. 

He couldn’t remember what to look for on laundry detergent (the HE logo) that meant it was safe for his newer style washing machine.

I pushed my cart forward a bit, smiled and then pointed out the logo on several different detergents so he could easily find what he was looking for. He smiled back and said thank you. I told him it was no problem and that sometimes with all of the options available today, it’s easy to get confused.

As I took a step further to continue shopping, the man again thanked me and told me his wife had passed away a few years earlier, but he knew how to do laundry and how to cook for himself because he did so during the war.

He told me he was in the National Guard and was a cook for 8 years throughout those years. That’s how learned to eat well. He loves salads and these days, eats a lot of fish. He boasted about a recent morning of fishing with a friend. They did really well, and caught a lot of perch.

He likes fish. So do I. One of the benefits of living right on the shoreline of Lake Erie, is good fishing. I have memories of my father taking me out on his boat fishing as a child.

He proceeded to tell me that when he went home to clean all of the fish a lot of them were female and had eggs. He took them out and instead of discarding them, gave them to an acquaintance who preferred the egg sacs themselves over the actual perch.

How funny I thought- it brought up a memory I have of my father breading and frying fish and fish eggs in our kitchen and my grandmother just loving the eggs. Those were her favorite. I felt a smile come across my face as this man brought to light an old childhood memory of mine.

After a little more small talk, I said goodbye and told the man to have a nice day. “You too,” he said, “and a better tomorrow!”

The 10 extra minutes I spent talking to someone who probably had no one else to talk, made my day.

I had to shop a little faster to get to my daughter’s school on time, but I did it. I did all I had to do while making time for a little kindness too.

Make time for kindness each day and treat others how you would like to be treated. Those few moments of kindness can mean so much to someone.

It will probably brighten up your day as well!

Welcome to May my friends! I am so looking forward to warmer Spring-like weather and being able to finally get out to my garden and spend some time outdoors. Have you been enjoying Spring so far? Last month my family & I spent a few amazing weeks in Florida and unfortunately we came home to temperatures hovering around freezing. All of that has changed now, and with everything starting to bloom, I was excited to see what this month’s fix had in store for me. Papermoon Bastille Tulip Sleeve Blouse $44

I really liked this color and I love tulips! The sleeves were really cute and I felt like this is probably something that I would have normally kept. At the same time, I feel like I have a good amount of blouses on hand for those days I get a little more dressed up, but for the most part I am very casual. I realized I could live without this even though it was pretty.

Pixley Millie Textured Knit Dress $68

I asked for another casual dress because they are just easy. I loved the color and pattern of this and I actually purchased one quite similar from Lands End before our trip. I tried it on anyways and I thought it was okay, but I felt very self conscious. Even though this covered my chest completely, I felt like it looked too chesty if that makes sense.

Alice Blue Earlson Split Neck Blouse $44

I really liked these colors, especially now that I had a little color from the sun myself. This was very cute with jean, but then again, I probably have enough blouses and the underarms were a little low on this.

Eden Society Westwood Blazer $98

I have been looking for a white blazer for a long time now. I think it’s a must have in anyone’s Spring & Summer wardrobe and I just wasn’t able to find one that I liked. The fitting was off or the material wasn’t what I wanted. I wanted a style that looked casual but could be dressed up a bit too. I would have absolutely loved to have this with me on our trip for one of those cooler dinners on the beach in the evening, but oh, well. I have it now and I LOVE IT! It can be worn and styled with so many different things.

The Verdict: Kept

Gentle Souls Juniper Berry Cork Wedge $195

Yes. You read that correctly. $195! Now when I get a fix, I never look at the sheet that lists all of the prices right away. I try everything on without letting cost interfere with my opinion on a piece and I focus on the fit and how I like it.

These shoes were amazingly comfortable, especially for being wedges. I loved the comfort. I loved the color. I loved the fit. There was something about these though that looked like an older woman’s style shoe… I tried them on with the dress I received, and it looked nice, but I wasn’t planning on keeping them.

So after I was done trying everything on I always get dressed, throw myself down on our bed and drum roll please…. open the invoice. Oh. My. Goodness. Now I’m a simple girl, I really am. I live in the country with mud, lots of mud and 4 children… and barn cats and a big furry dog and a husband who runs a tractor and wears flannel shirts, worn jeans, a Carhartt jacket and work boots.

I love to feel nice, look nice and get “dressed” up every once in a while to switch up my jeans, v-neck t-shirt and rain boot look, but I have NEVER and I mean NEVER have spent $200 on 1 pair of shoes. I don’t think I have ever spent $100 dollars on a pair of shoes. To me, that would be absolutely ridiculous!

I am a firm believer in purchasing quality items for more money (you get what you pay for) because they last and are more comfortable. But designer names don’t really mean anything to me (these were Kenneth Cole) and I understand that one of the nice things about receiving a Stitch Fix is trying new things that may be out of your comfort zone. I’m not trying to complain, I guess I was just very surprised… and a little shocked by the price.  To me $200 looks like a number they would ring up for me at the grocery store to feed my family of 6 for the week.

I love my stylist, I really do, and I think everything else was right on with my style and taste, but I felt a little of disconnect here. These were not practical for me…

Close Your Eyes, Take a Deep Breath & Refocus. Get rid of the negativity clouding your thoughts. Get back on track with what you have to get done today step by step. Don’t get overwhelmed with a long list of to do’s. Check things off one at a time and you will be on your way to a productive and positive outlook on the day.

Talk to a Friend. I think we all have that one friend or family member who is always in a great mood and just loves life. They always turn lemons into lemonade and being around them or talking to them just puts you in a better mood. Let their positive energy rub off on you!

Exercise. Hit the gym, go for a bike ride, a brisk walk or even do a little work in your garden. Get moving and get your blood flowing. When you exercise your body releases endorphins which trigger positive feelings in your body. Even a half an hour of activity can make a huge difference! You’re worth it, so set aside that time for yourself.

Know You’re Not Alone. There are days, especially as a mother when you feel like a failure. Where you feel like no one understands you and that you are all alone. The truth is, you’re NOT alone! There are so many mothers out there who feel the same way and who understand where you are coming from. You can meet up with a group of moms at the playground, schedule a play date (for your child & yourself) or find support online.

Do Something You Love. Life is busy. Sometimes we get so caught up in our to do lists of things we think we need to do everyday that we have no time left over for ourselves. Whether it’s playing a sport, scrapbooking, cooking, reading or knitting, if all else fails, taking part in an activity that you love helps you get back to yourself. When you can’t shake that negative feeling you’re having all day, make the time for a hobby even if it means taking something off your to do list. You’ll be so much better off in the long run!

As you browse around social media each day, you’re bound to come across simple mishaps from day to day life with the caption #MomFail. As organized as certain aspects of my life are, there are plenty of things I can still work on. I’ve been a hot mess before 8 am, felt like a failure as a mom and it does NOT feel good!

You finally have the house cleaned up and are starting to feel halfway organized, when your older children get home from school, there’s activities to get to, homework to do and everyone still needs a shower or bath before dinner. Dinner? Om days like this leftovers or breakfast for dinner will just have to do. That feeling of overwhelming feeling creeps over you again and you end up right back where you started the day. You’re thinking #MomFail!

There are days we feel angry, critical, impatient, disorganized, and simply just not good enough.

Hey guys! Welcome to April! I hope April is off to a nice Springy start for you. We’ve got a few flurries in the air today, but I’m not going to complain after a week of 50-60 degree weather. Our family will also be going away for vacation soon, so I was really looking forward to some Spring Color in my Stitch Fix this month! My stylist Holly didn’t disappoint!

I was a little nervous about my fix this month because I updated my style profile and went down a size. I lost 10 lbs. over the last few months and the tops I was receiving in my fixes were starting to feel too loose, especially in the shoulders. I had my fingers crossed that my larger chest would be able to fit in my new size. I was so excited when they did! Boy, losing 10 lbs. never felt so good…and I’m celebrating this month with this awesome fix!

Daniel Rainn Bettola Split Neck Blouse $64

This blouse is simple, light, flowy, and I just love the colors! This can be dressed up or down and will be perfect for the Spring & Summer months!

Gilli Gary Dress $68

Last month I received a dress (I sent it back) that was very similar to a dress I should have kept from a Fix last year. It’s not very often that something you’ve sent back is available months later when you realize you should have kept it. I was thrilled when my stylist sent this same dress, this time in a smaller size. This dress is cute, comfy and on a chilly night looks nice with a denim jacket. I think this is date night attire:)

Skies are Blue Niels Lace Yoke Blouse $48

I wasn’t really sure about this blouse, but I liked the color. I was afraid it would be a little too revealing since it’s just lace that covers the top of your chest. I love to layer things, and I’m pretty simple, so I grabbed my favorite navy cardigan and a long necklace, and I really liked the look.

MIA Esie Laser-Cut Flats $49

Shoes! If you haven’t heard yet, Stitch Fix now has shoes! I use to be such a shoe girl, especially before I had children. Now that my youngest is 5, I feel like I can get a little more stylish with my footwear considering I’m not chasing around any toddlers these days. These flats were such a pretty coral color and they were super comfy! These are definitely going with me on vacation this year!

Loveappella Carlita Jersey Maxi Dress $78

Oh, this dress. It looks very similar to a dress I kept last year (and have since given it to my mother) but I was excited to try it on because dresses are great when the weather is warmer. I liked the colors, but this seemed to make my chest look even bigger than it is. It was just a tad bit long even though it was a petite size and even though I was wearing my high wedge sandals, but I am only 5’1″. I also felt pretty self conscious because it’s quite low so I pinned the very bottom and threw on a light cardigan. It’s not my favorite piece, but if I keep this I will get 25% off my entire fix…

The Verdict: Kept

 (I have had great success selling my Stitch Fix items that no longer fit or that have hung in my closet and are NWT on EBAY! Just a thought for you in case you are in the same predicament and don’t really love that 5th item but want to save that 25%! People can’t get enough Stitch Fix! They love it!)

Hello friends! It’s time for another Stitch Fix! The weather here the past few weeks have been so strange. One week we have snow, and lots of it, and then the next week everything melts and it starts to feel like Spring. I actually received this “fix” last week when we were covered in snow, and I wasn’t feeling very Springy. Today as I write this, it’s 70 degrees and beautiful! Pixley Kathy Striped Fit & Flare Dress $68

This dress was cute, but I personally hate this type of neckline because it doesn’t really flatter a larger chest, but it was cute with a denim jacket. The back and shoulders of this dress were too big though and it felt awkward on. This is very similar to a dress that I probably should have kept from last year’s July Stitch Fix, which I liked more than this one. *Psss- Stylist Holly…I would buy that other dress now if I was sent it again!

Brixton Ivy Kessie Faux Wrap Dress $64

I really liked the color of this dress, and because I love wrap type dresses, I thought this for sure would be a winner. It’s sleeveless, but the top part of the dress was actually too big. It hung and draped in spots making it very unflattering. Something about this made me feel like an old lady too…

Papermoon Iglesia Pleated Blouse $48

Oh, Lord. Where do I start with this one. I hated this one. I really, really hated this one. My daughter must have taken 10 pictures of me in this shirt and I look like I am 9 months pregnant in every.single.one! There was one picture we took that was more of a side view and my daughter said I only looked about 8 months pregnant in that one! lol. We have a lot of fun with these fixes each month and I hope you do too. If something doesn’t look right, it’s okay. Every body shape is different and I’ve learned to embrace my every changing shape because it’s me. This shirt however…it had to go! Cute pattern though.

Market & Spruce Soos Bar Back Cable Stitch Knit Top $58

Oh my goodness. I think I may have been overtired and a little grouchy while trying items on this month, but I had an issue with this top too. The back is fun, but it really wasn’t a style I felt comfortable in and although it fit nicely overall, it was falling off of my shoulders. It was sooo hot too! Even with snow on the ground, I felt like I couldn’t wait to get this one off. The color was also a little blah…

Market & Spruce Careen V-Neck Doleman Knit Top $48

I saved the best for last! I didn’t think I would like this shirt, but once I put it on I loved it! Again, I like stripes and that usually is not super flattering on a curvy gal like myself, but the v-neck cut was right and this was just so darn soft and comfortable. I paired this with my dark gray skinny jeans I kept from last month’s fix and I felt like myself. This will be so cute when traveling and it’s a perfect outfit to wear while we are in between seasons!

Are you dreaming about Spring yet? With winter’s late start around here, I am enjoying what this time of year has to offer. Snow is certainly beautiful, especially when it covers every little branch after a storm or when it glistens and sparkles as the sun comes up. When the weather isn’t too cold (like this weekend with -30 degree wind chills expected), I actually enjoy bundling up and getting out for a little nature walk too. The best part is coming inside, sitting by the fire and getting cozy with a soft blanket and a cup of hot chocolate. I requested some more comfy and cozy pieces for this month’s Stitch Fix too! It’s hard to feel like a new stylist will “get” your style, but I think mine did a good job! What do you think?

 41Hawthorn Concord Striped Draped Pocket Cardigan $58

This cardigan was very cute. I liked the stripes and that it had a casual feel that could be dressed up a bit or down as well. To me it looked nautical and more Springy. I chose to try it with a simple dress that I might take along on our Spring vacation in a few months, but even though I thought it was really cute, I just could not get into a new season mind set with snow on the ground. This would probably just hand in the closet for a few months. It would look really cute with jeans a colorful v neck tee and sandals though….

Loveappella Cesare Size Zip Knit Top $64

Since I am a casual gal, I liked that my stylist this month kept that in mind. This soft top was really comfortable and the zippers on the sides were cute. The sleeves were a bit long though and I think as far as sweatshirt material tops go- the price tag was a little high.

Just Black Faye Skinny Jean $88

Boy oh boy, I never thought I would like skinny jeans, but if you want to be even a little bit in style this year, you must own a pair or two. They look great with boots (these boots are just for the picture- my boots these days are snow boots!) and if you find the right pair, they are super comfy too! I almost cringed at the thought of trying these on this month, but once I put them on I loved them! These are so soft, they stretch nice and will be a great addition to my wardrobe. I really liked the dark gray color too. I have learned, especially with pants and jeans, that if you find a pair you like and they fit good, and make you feel good while you wear them, you better buy them!

Skies are Blue Fabia Crochet Detail Knit Top $58

I love the color navy because it goes with everything. This top was nice because it was casual and could be worn with jeans or dressier pants. There is really pretty detail on the bottom and on the arms which gave this a lot of character that most simple casual shirts don’t have. Overall, I think it’s very cute, but it’s dark and until you get up close it looks like a normal casual tee. Since it’s been cold, I am usually layering tops with sweaters, so I felt like the price was high for a shirt that’s detail would probably be covered a majority of the time.

Gorjana Cambria Rectangle Spike Necklace $65

I really don’t need a new necklace. The truth is, is that I don’t really wear them and if I do, I prefer longer ones. This one reminded me of little spikes and it just didn’t feel like me. It did look well made though and came with a cute pouch too.
